How did fruits and vegetables get their names?
Names of all things we know have their own unique origins. The gooseberry was initially gorseberry. Gorse in Saxon meant ‘rough’. Gooseberry grows on a rough shrub. Strawberry is a corrupted form of strayberry as runners from the plant stray in all directions. Similarly cranberry was once craneberry as the slender stalks are like the long legs and neck of the crane!
