Butterfly Museum, Shillong, in Meghalaya
Shillong, in Meghalaya, is home to a Butterfly Museum, with butterflies and beetles from all over India displayed here. The museum, also known as the Wankhar Entomology Museum, is the private, lifetime collection of the late SK Sircar and his son, the late D Wankhar. At present, the museum is maintained and managed by Sircar’s son-in-law, Mr. Dawling. The museum also has moths and spiders, the star attraction being a tarantula. Fortunately, since Sircar was most passionate about butterflies, these outnumber the bugs, beetles, spiders, and the like. The museum was started in 1939 when Mr. Sircar was not a qualified entomologist!
