The rock shelters housing the Bhimbetka cave paintings are a World Heritage Site. The paintings here are the earliest known depiction of human life in India. The Bhimbetka rock shelters are believed to have been inhabited for over 100,000 years. Some of the paintings date back 30,000 years! On the walls and ceilings are paintings of everyday life, of hunting, dancing, cooking, eating, drinking, merrymaking, childbirth, religious symbols, and rites.
