Slow and Steady Wins the Race

The hare and the tortoise

It is rightly said that slow and steady wins the race. It is not essential that one who is capable of taking big leaps alone should be able to win the day. The story of the hare and the tortoise is too well-known to deserve a detailed mention here.

If we have a look around us towards objects of nature and birds and animals, we shall be able to realize the truth of the statement: “Slow and steady wins the race.” I

As the sun rises in the morning, it does not suddenly reach the climax. It slowly climbs up till it reaches the highest point in the sky.

Look at the plants. Those which are flowers today, were buds yesterday or the day before. Those which are buds today will be flowers in a day or so. These buds unfold themselves into beautiful expansive flowers slowly and even imperceptibly. But they remain steady in this process of unfolding which is akin to all kinds of evolution.

Man millions of years ago

It is said that millions of years ago, the man was only an animal. Probably he walked on fours and lived among animals and liked animals. It is only that he evolved himself slowly and steadily. Today, man is considered to be the crown of creation. Other animals too have tried to evolve themselves but they have not succeeded in their venture to that extent as man has done.

It is said that the cockroach is perhaps the worst among all the creatures. For, even a few crores years ago, it was perhaps living in this very condition.

Developed Countries

The major developed countries of the world such as America, China, etc. have built their infrastructure slowly and steadily, and they have at last become great powers.

Of course, the USA defeated the ruling country, England, in 1776. But it was not as powerful at that time as it is today. It has built itself up steadily and slowly. Germany and Japan were the two shattered nations after World War II. Today, they are counted among the foremost economies of the world.

India and Pakistan

It must be said to the credit of India and to a great extent to the credit of Pakistan also that they have made great progress during the last fifty years. It is, in spite of several setbacks, mainly due to meticulous planning and because the well-chalked-out projects were executed carefully. It is a different story that much of this progress has got nullified and a vast majority of the populace in these two countries still lives in abject poverty, mainly because of the runaway increase in population and the arms race in which they have involved themselves.

It is rightly said that Rome was not built in a day. It is also said that the mills of God grind slowly but surely.

It is said about George Bernard Shaw that at the initial stage when he tried to become a public speaker, he was not much of a success. He became nervous and he trembled and could not even sign or note the minutes of a meeting properly when he was asked to do so. But he held on with a firm mind and a strong will and ultimately developed into a great public speaker.

An athlete or a sportsman who may not be considered quite successful at the initial stages can become a great figure in his field if he continues practicing the game without getting disheartened.

One who wants to develop strong muscles and heart, can do so by taking exercise regularly. It is a slow and steady process. Anyone can develop a towering personality in course of time through conscious, slow, and steady efforts.

Revolutions and movements

In the world, revolutions happen rarely. Most of the movements gather momentum slowly and steadily. Although on the surface the First War of Freedom in India seems to be an unpremeditated sudden event, yet history tells us the atmosphere for the war was being created for some time due to discontent in the army and the people.

We must be able to understand that earthquakes do not come suddenly, nor do storms appear all of a sudden. The hidden pressure always takes time to build up such as to take a tangible or palpable shape.

will be most appropriate to say about a student that the one who has a daily routine of studying and working regularly for the examination, often steals a march over the one who believes in studying only near the examination even though for many hours at a stretch.

The lesson

Hence, let us learn the lesson that we should work slowly and steadily to achieve our goal since slow and steady wins the race.
