Pondicherry is also known as Poduke and Puducherry, but its earliest name was Vedapuri.
Auroville or the City of Dawn’, located in Puducherry, was founded by Mirra Alfassa, Sri Aurobindo’s French disciple, also known as “The Mother”. Auroville was conceived as a city where people from India and abroad could live and work together in a spiritual environment. The huge Matri Mandir is both the spiritual centre and the meditation hall of Auroville. Auroville’s unusual buildings are designed by French architect Roger Auger.
