The Golden Quadrilateral

The Golden Quadrilateral is a highway network in India. It is slated to connect the four original metropolitan towns i.e. Dean, Munnibai, Kolkata, and Chennai with each other, thereby forming a quadrilateral of sorts. The project commenced in 1999 and is being managed by the National Highway Authority of India.

As the largest highway project in India, it incorporates building 6500 km of road with four to eight-lane express highways. Besides establishing a better and faster transport network between the four metropolises, it would improve the highway network along the route whilst passing through major towns’ en-routes and boost growth and development. It will provide opportunities for farm and factory production to be transported faster from the hinterland to major cities and ports for sale and export. Better transportation provides an impetus to a nation’s economy directly by building better infrastructure and indirectly through demand for construction materials.
