India follows a numeric system for postal code called PIN code system. It was introduced in 1972 for the rationalization of mail sorting, handling and delivery. The PIN stands for Postal Index Number.

For convenience, India has been divided into eight PIN regions; and one more which is a ‘functional’ zone exclusively for the Army P.O. and Field P.O.

A PIN is a 6 digits code. The first digit indicates the region in which the given post office falls; the second digit indicates the sub-region or one of the postal circles; and the third digit indicates the sorting district within the sub-region. The last or final three digits refer to the delivery post office. For example, first, two digits ’11’ in the 6 digits PIN would identify the sub-region Delhi, 12 & 13 would stand for Haryana, 14 to 16 for Punjab, and so on. Since a pin code helps in quicker and error-free delivery of the nail, always remember to append the PIN to your postal address.
