Urban Community

Urban community is one of the important segments of Indian society. People living in urban regions do not depend upon natural resources to fulfill their needs. They depend on tools made by man and lay stress on science and technology. Thus, they depend on manmade environment, which is based on rationalism and scientific approach. People living in urban areas work and earn their living by taking up different types of occupations and services in industries, factories, markets, educational, recreational and health centers, transportation and communication as well as governmental and non-governmental offices. Division of labour and specialization is found in cultural activities, trade, education, industry, health, etc. Skilled, semi-skilled, unskilled workers, artisans, technicians, experts, professionals, administrators, artisans, etc. involve themselves in different kinds of activities. Work in urban community is divided among the employees on the bases of age, sex, education, training, efficiency, talents, interests, etc. As urban community is more crowded, it is very large. The density of population is also very high. As people from surrounding areas migrate to the city, it results into the extension of city and suburbs. With time, city is changed into metropolitan city. Urban community is made of people belonging to different race, religion, caste, language, occupation, class, etc. One can find diversity of population in terms of thinking, behaving, habits, morals, beliefs, practices, food and even dressing habits. Voluntary organizations like trade unions, sports clubs, libraries, political parties, etc. are found in urban community. People are becoming members of such voluntary associations because urban families are failing to satisfy various interests and needs of its members. Most of the urban people prefer to take their independent decisions on matters like education, occupation, enterprise, marriage, etc. They do not like to bind themselves with any specific group or relation.
