What is the significance of April Fools’ Day?
On April Fools’ Day we play practical jokes on friends and relatives. Some think the French started it. In 1564, Charles IX decreed that the New Year should begin on January 1st. Until then April 1st was the beginning of the New Year. Some people refused to go along with this and the others poked fun at them by sending mock gifts and inviting them to mock New Year celebrations. In short, they were April fools.
