When did the wedding cake originate?
The ancient Romans had wedding cakes. Wedding cakes were part of the wedding ceremonies of rich Roman families. The bride and groom ate the cake and also shared it with the guests at the wedding. The cake was meant to be a symbol of plenty. In Europe, guests would bring spiced buns to the wedding. These would be heaped up on the table. The story goes that a French cook had the idea of making one big cake out of this mound of small cakes. Thus the multi-tiered wedding cake was born.
