Maharashtra’s “valley of flowers”
Kaas, a plateau 300 km from Mumbai and 25 km from Satara, is referred to as Maharashtra’s” valley of flowers” Towards the end of the monsoon, the meadows are covered with expanses of wildflowers in a profusion of colours like pink, mauve, white and yellow. In addition, there are balsams, rare ground orchids, bromeliads, grasses, algae, mosses, and ferns. Of the over 5000 flowering plants believed to be growing in the Western Ghats, 850 can be found in Kaas alone. The flowering season is at its peak from September to early October.
