Forts of India

The Indian landscape is dotted with numerous forts built by erstwhile rulers as a protection against the attacking forces. Each fort depicts its own history, architecture and grandeur, amply showcasing ilk: splendour, taste and life style of the Moguls, Nawabs, Maharajas, and chieftains and the townships that grew around it. The main palaces were made within the fort premises. The construction was generally on a hillock, using sandstone blocks or bricks with thick walls and surrounded by wide moats. Several secret passages were made from the palace outwards to provide escape routes to the royalty. The forts were complete cities in themselves.

Rajasthan has the maximum number of forts. Some of the famous forts in India are Lal Qila-Red Fort in Delhi, Mehrangarh in Jodhpur; Amber in Jaipur, Golconda in Hyderabad; and the forts of Chittorgarh, Agra, Gwalior, Mandu and Junagadh. Each fort has a story to tell and present the magnanimity in which the royalty lived in India.
