Mahabalipuram
Mahabalipuram is situated along the shores of Bay of Bengal, about 60 km from Chennai. Pallava Kings built the famous “Rath” cave temples here from the 7th to the 9th century. Each temple has been carved out of a single rock and showcases the artistic genius of architects and admirable skill of sculptors and artisans. Most of the temples are well preserved till date.
The temples have been constructed in innovative designs and resemble the shape of chariots. The five chariots are named after the five Pandavas of Mahabharat — Dharamraja, Bhim, Arjuna, Nakul and Sahdev. The sixth is named after the Pandavas’ queen – Draupadi, and the balance two as Varah and Shore temples. Additionally, there are Mandaps i.e. pillared halls carved into the rock face; designed as a shrine, with a sanctum and an outer hall. The shallow porticoes are adorned with exquisite sculptures of gods, goddesses and mythological figures.
It is a wealth of beauty and history and makes for a wonderful holiday visit givne the proximity with the beach.
