Monuments in Maharashtra

Centuries ago, there was a tradition of erecting monuments of victorious heroes, martyrs, saints, authors, artists, kings and emperors in the form of memorials.

The Moghul Emperor Aurangzeb erected a tomb in Aurangabad in memory of his wife Dilarasbano alias Rabia Durrani. Ajamshah built a memoir on the same tomb, which came to be known as Bibi ka Makbara’.

Golghumat is a monumental building built by Sultan Muhammad Adilshah in Bijapur. This monument is famous for its echo, lofty and shape. Similarly, after the death of Shivaji’s mother Jijabai, her shrine was created at Pachad near the foot of Raigad.

One finds the shrine of Shivaji at the Raigad fort. Sambhaji was enshrined at Vadhu Budruk on the bank of river Bhima.

A beautiful memoir of Tanaji Malusare is at fort Sinhgad. The Chhatri or memoir of Mahadji Shinde is at Vanawadi in Pune.

There is a pillar of Four Walls in Satara. It was erected in the memory of people who lost their lives in the revolution of 1857. In 1911, on the arrival of King George V, Gateway of India was built.

There are several historical monuments existing today in Maharashtra. It reminds us of the past as well as inspires and motivates us.
