Why do camels have humps?

Long journeys without food and water are unimaginable for us. But for the camel it is no big deal. The reason lies in its hump which acts as a storehouse of food and water. Before beginning a long journey a camel is given enough food and water. This results in a huge hump of fat growing on its back. The camel can survive on this stored food for many days. The hump enables the camel to survive in an inhospitable desert habitat where food and water are hard to come by.
