What is the origin of fairy tales?

In the old times people believed in fairies. It is believed that fairy tales are based on strange or unusual events that people had experienced.. These events when narrated over generations gathered into an oral tradition of stories which we know as fairy tales. Perhaps the stories became a little exaggerated too in the telling.
