My Favourite City
Many people have their favourite city and I do too. My favourite city is Madurai. A city in the state of Tamil Nadu. Madurai is the second largest city in Tamil Nadu and is known for its world renowned Meenakshi Temple. This temple is famous for its intricate carvings and scriptures. The city is situated on the bank of river Vaigai and boasts of a rich culture and heritage. More than 2,500 years old, it is one of the most ancient cities of India. Once, the capital of Pandya kings, Madurai is considered to have been built by Pandyan King Kulasekara, in the 6th century BC.
Madurai has something for everybody. The famous Charriot Festival is of great religious importance and attracts pilgrims from across the country. The adventurous lot of tourists can visit Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary and Megamalai tea estates, while the nature lovers can go to Kodaikanal, Suruli and Kumbakkarai Water Falls. Madurai presents a beautiful blend of art, culture and spirituality. South Indian delicacies are found at their best here, as the city is famous for its delicious food and its Jasmine flowers which are exported worldwide for making perfumes. Apart from this, the local people are very friendly, helpful and cheerful and the city itself has an unhurried and relaxed pace.
In the past few years, the city has witnessed tremendous growth in infrastructure and the property market. People in Madurai have a high respect for the culture and traditions of the city. Ballads, folk dances and drama are very popular. It is well connected by road, rail and air to all the major cities of Tamil Nadu and the rest of India. In brief, it is a beautiful city and my favourite one.
