Miser’s Logic

A rich farmer called on the doctor to attend to his sick wife.

The farmer was well known for being tight-fisted. Knowing full well his nature, the doctor demanded the fees in advance. But the farmer assured the doctor, “Whether you cure my wife or kill her, I promise to pay you promptly without you having to sue.”

Despite the best efforts of the doctor, the woman died. He duly demanded his fees.

“Did you cure my wife?” asked the man “No,” admitted the doctor. “Did you kill her?” “Certainly not,” the doctor said indignantly. The farmer gave a startling reply.
